Dorm Room Garden

So, it has occurred to me that a few of my lovely readers are heading off to college so I decided to do a small post with more or less a college theme.  This my friends is about dorm(or itty bitty apartment) gardening.  I stumbled across a post on survivingcollege.com(a great resource by the way) about gardening in your dorm.  I love to garden, granted, I'm not great at it however it is soothing, good for the soul and great for your kitchen.  Personally I have a small garden on my back porch as well as some bits here and there on my front porch.  I also keep a bunch of potted herbs and flowers in my kitchen window(which I hope have survived my absence this summer).  Gardening indoors isn't as difficult as you might think.  You have a plethora of options from a simple potted flower or a crawling vine to hang in your window.  Terrariums are also easy to take care of and quite fun to look at.  There's also this cool idea which I believe came from the good folks at Apartment Therapy, how sweet is this?  This would be perfect for someone with just a little bit of outdoor space.

Dandelion

Call me crazy but I love dandelions.  I think they are the most ignored of the wild flowers.  What's so wrong with dandelions?  They're happy yellow, wildly abundant just about everywhere and they don't cost a thing(also no one cares if you pick them).  I've currently got a lovely bouquet of dandelions sitting in a tea pot on my happy yellow kitchen table and I think they look just lovely.  So don't turn your nose up at these little posies, go on, pick a bunch and enjoy.

P.S.  Wild flowers are a great way to go green!

Penny Saver: Flowers

I don't know about you, but I love fresh flowers.  And sadly since my thumb seems to be a rather sallow shade of yellow my potted flowers don't always work out.  When I find wild flowers I'm more than happy to pick them, but sadly, living in Boston, this does not happen very often.  So this brings me to my penny saving tip...Daisies.  Occasionally my loving boyfriend will pick me up flowers at the grocery store(generally this goes with him making brunch, yum) and last time he did this he picked up some simple, pretty, white daisies.  Those suckers are going on a month now and they look as gorgeous as day one.  Moral of the story?  If you love fresh flowers but can't afford to splurge on fancy roses, then daisies are you're prettiest and longest lasting bet.  They smell great too!

Go Green: Anywhere!!

House plants are such a simple and easy way to go green.  They liven up your decor and they're great for the air you breath.  Just look at this lovely overgrown kitchen, it makes the whole house feel a little more earthy.  And with so many inexpensive options, I like spider plants, you can have them all over the house.  Just a little water and some sun and they're happy as can be.  I also keep a lovely money tree around, from IKEA!  The funny thing is the day after we got it my boyfriend and I fell into almost $4,000!  Coincidence, maybe, but I prefer to think my little plant works.
